Whether you have the perfect log cabin, or chalet nestled in the mountains, or on a lake or perhaps you simple want to add a touch of country charm to your home, rustic log bunk beds is the place to start.

There are several options available for you on the Internet. Through the Internet, you can find loft log bunk beds, twin over twin log bunk beds, full over full or even twin over full or queen size bunk beds. Amish crafted furniture is sturdy and well made. You can find nearly any size of bunk bed, however, I have yet found a twin over king. Because of the durability, Amish made bunk beds are the perfect solution for college students looking for an inexpensive loft bed, in addition there are many styles they can choose from including those with futons.

To ensure that you sleep in a safe bunk bed, make sure that you purchase one that meets all the federal regulations regarding bunk beds. Most accidents that occur with bunk beds involve children under the 3 years of age. However, many of these accidents are avoidable if safety rails had been used on both sides of the top bed. Many people press the bunk bed against the wall and this will suffice, however it must be firmly pressed against the wall to prevent it from sliding away from the wall. There are also regulations regarding headboards to keep children safe. To read full the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s ruling on bunk beds visit their website at: cpsc.gov

Bunk beds that comply with the federal regulations are constructed to hold an adult weighing up to 250 pounds. For those who are pushing this limit, should consider cedar instead. Generally, beds constructed from cedar have logs that are 5 ½ to 6 inches in diameter, while those made from pine are only approximately 3 ½ inches in diameter. While, both types comply with federal specifications, for added support and strength it is best to use cedar logs instead of pine for the simple reason they are larger.

Several log bunk beds use metal frames to support the mattress, however with superbly crafted Amish built beds, they use wood frames that can support both a box spring as well as the mattress. Another alternative to supporting the mattress is referred to as a Bunkie board.

The Bunkie board is a piece of plywood that is approximately ¾ inch cut to the size of the box spring. It rest inside either the wood or metal bed frame and supports the mattress. If you use a box spring, then you don’t need a Bunkie board, however, when you don’t use a box spring, then a Bunkie board should be use to support the mattress.

The ladder is another option that you have to consider when purchasing your bunk bed. Several styles of Amish made beds have ladders built right into at the end of the bed. For these styles of bunk beds, you don't have to worry about a ladder leaning away from the bed. Several other styles come with moveable ladder, which hook on the end or side of the bed. To determine which style would best suite you, first you should consider the amount of space you have. For small rooms, you may want to consider the beds, which have the ladder built onto them, where as for larger rooms slanted ladders would work well.

If you purchase a pine bunk bed that has a metal frame, you can cover the metal frame with half logs so that the metal frame doesn’t show when the covers are thrown back. These half logs are for decoration only and should not be confused with safety rails, which attach to the top of the bunk bed. Top safety rails should always be included with the log bunk bed. However, decorative half rails will have to be purchased separately.

Before you purchase, you must measure the room first. Many people make the mistake of purchasing a set of log bunk beds only to discover they do not fit comfortably into to the room. Such problems could have been avoided if you take the time to measure carefully first.
